Client Spotlight: Mickala Cheadle

Ms. Mickala Cheadle

Positive Images has been proud to have Ms. Mickala Cheadle as a part of our family since she was a Senior Portrait client. However, even as a teen Mickala was crystal clear about her career goal: She uses her God given talents on stage as a vocalist and actress. She is an Oakland native and a shining example of the talents cultivated through the Young Musicians Program at UC Berkeley. YMP served as a incubator to nurture her talents as a vocalist, pianist and song writer for 8 years.
One of the results of her years in YMP, was the formation of a dynamic group of young  performers called, "Too Close"  I had a great time creating one of their first promotional photographs, when most of the members were still in high school. However, I was really blown away when I had an opportunity to hear them perform at Maxwell's in Oakland.  Given the sheer talent, professionalism, and stage presence of this R/B cover band, I sincerely doubt that most audience members were even aware that the band wasn't even old enough to be patrons in the venue! Shortly after, I hired Too Close to perform at a Positive Images Senior Portrait Open House.  Local teens had a great afternoon being serenaded by the rich vocal skills of Ms. Cheadle.

Too Close
It must be Mickala's generous spirit that keeps landing her magical stage roles. The African-American Shakespeare Company cast her as the fairy godmother in their production of Cinderella at the Buriel Clay Theater. Here in Oakland at the Malonga Art Center, she portrayed, the Good Witch in The Wiz with the Belasco Theater Company.
And it is that generous spirit that has lead her to work with artistic youth even younger than herself. Amelia Earhart Elementary School hired her as their musical director when they staged Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. She has even traveled to Costa Rica numerous times, with her church, Imani Community Church. There she has able to help young vocalist develop their talent by challenging them to grow.
I had opportunity to witness her coaching style first hand this Fall when Mickala helped my son prepare for his first high school audition...I was amazed at her gentle, but firmly demanding coaching style. Needless to say, he got the role!

Currently, you can catch Mickala performing weekly at the Gospel Brunch at 1300 Fillmore in San Francisco.  She is performing at the Paragon at the Claremont tommrow nite....at any venue, you are in for a treat when Ms. Mickala hits the stage!
